Company Section Bible Knowledge Competition
The Company Section Bible Knowledge competition was held on Thursday, 12th November 2009 at the 16th Company premises on a very wet and windy evening. Six companies entered teams and the final result reflected an interesting competition on difficult bible passages.
The final result was:
1st 8th Company 39 points
2nd 16th Company 34 points
3rd 14th Company 32 points
4th 45th Company 26½ points
5th 18th Company 24½ points
6th 19th Company 12 points
Many congratulations to the 8th Company on their win and also to the other competitors for their hard work. Thanks to Mr Wrigley (scorer) and Mrs White (question master). Many thanks also to the 16th Company for their hospitality.

Christmas Stamps
You may recall the main issue of Christmas stamps for 2008 were secular [ie
pantomime characters] but you may not have been aware religious stamps
[Madonna and Child stamps of classic paintings] had to specially requested
at your post office.
Well, for Christmas 2009 Royal Mail are celebrating Christmas with stamps
featuring nativity themed images from stained glass windows of Britain's
parish churches, chosen for their seasonal resonance and artistry.
The stamps feature: an Angel; Madonna and Child; Joseph; a Wise Man; a
Shepherd.
In addition, the 1st and 2nd Class Madonna and Child stamps of classic
paintings, first issued in 2007 and available in 2008 (not to be confused
with the Madonna and Child stained glass window 2009 stamp), are to be on
sale again for Christmas 2009.
Presumably as last year customers who prefer to have these particular stamps
will have to specifically ask for them.
These stamps are available from 3 November.
eDofE
This is the new interactive online system that helps young people manage their DofE programme and Leaders to monitor their progress. As previously advertised to Nottingham Battalion, a very successful course for B.B. Leaders was held at The Pearson Centre for Young People on 7th November 2009 attended by 10 Leaders from Central England who had the opportunity to try out the new system on computers under the direction of tutors from The DofE. eDofE will be available for The Boys’ Brigade from 1st January 2010 and will run alongside the present system of Record Books and a short session on eDofE will be included in the DofE Leaders’ Training Day at Felden Lodge on 13th February 2010.
We have been told by The DofE that very shortly eDofE packs will automatically be provided alongside any Record Books purchased to enable Leaders and Participants to decide which system to use.
If you have any concerns about this changeover, please contact me.

First Aid Course for Outdoors
A further two-day First Aid Course for Outdoors has been arranged suitable for those holding, or wishing to work towards, The Boys’ Brigade’s Expedition and Outdoor Leadership qualification and suitable for the majority of National Governing Bodies such as Mountain Leaders’ Training U.K., Sports Leaders’ U.K., etc. for Walking Group Leader Award, Mountain Leader Award, Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership.
The outdoor environment nearly always means that the casualty has to be looked after for a longer timescale than is typical in a more urban setting. This Course looks at how to manage the situation when the ambulance does not turn up in 10 minutes time, and is appropriate for those working at all levels of DofE expedition supervision and other outdoor activities. The interactive, hands-on training is delivered by a recognised H.S.E. provider and fully experienced and professional trainers with an active interest and commitment to the outdoor environment. A lot more emphasis is placed on incident management, monitoring casualties, and relaying information to Ambulance Crews and Mountain Rescue Teams. Minimal equipment is assumed and plenty of practical scenarios are provided with feedback and analysis given upon completion. The Course will include the following aspects:
* Recognition and monitoring of vital signs
* Incident management - scene and casualty assessment
* Management of the unconscious casualty
* Control of external bleeding
* Recognition and management of Shock
* CPR and blocked airway resuscitation
* Sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations
* Improvised splinting
* Head injuries
* Neck and spinal injuries
* Chest, abdomen, pelvis and thigh injuries
* Burns
* Common medical emergencies
* Bugs, bites and stings
* Hypothermia & Hyperthermia
* Outdoor incident management scenarios
* Remote improvised techniques
* Casualty handling (safe lifting & moving)
* Casualty handover
* First Aid Kits
On successful completion candidates will be awarded a certificate which lasts for 3 years, as well as receiving a comprehensive Course booklet.
The Course will be held on 6th and 7th March 2010 at The Blackwell Adventure Centre, near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire (approximately 2 miles from M42 (Junction 1) and 4 miles from M5 (Junction 4) ). The cost will be £55.00 (without camping accommodation) and £59.00 (with camping accommodation – supply own tent). Similar courses are often in the region of £120.00. Hot and cold drinks will be made available during both days, with local amenities for delegates to eat a meal and relax during the evening. Those who wish to attend this course should in the first instance e-mail dave_mayo@chasetrainingsolutions.co.uk or telephone 01543-271182.
“Building your Skills” and “Skills for Queen’s Badge” Courses
May I remind Captains and Company DofE Leaders that participants attending the above Courses who are doing their Volunteering by helping within the Company should remember to take along their Record Books for the Course Leader to sign the training course section. “Building your Skills” is required at Bronze DofE Standard and “Skills for Queen’s Badge” for Silver DofE Standard and particularly with the latter
I know there are participants this year who are travelling distances and it will cause delay and extra expense if the Record Books have to be posted backwards and forwards.

District Training Administrator
The East Midlands District of The Boys’ Brigade is seeking a voluntary administrator to deal with training courses. This is a job which can be mostly done by post apart from attendance at the three or four District Meetings per year and unless the person appointed wishes to actually attend each course to deal with the administration on the spot. There are about six difference types of course each year and the work entails programme planning, finding venues, inviting tutors, sending out joining instructions and consent forms (where appropriate) to participants, monitoring evaluation forms, certifying attendance and keeping records. If you know of anyone either with or without B.B. experience who would be suitable for this post please contact the East Midlands District Secretary, John Irons, on 01623-661735 or j.g.irons@ntlworld.com
